From solar stations to bio toilets: Indian Railways leads India’s clean energy shift

As part of India’s shift toward cleaner energy, the Indian Railways has introduced several initiatives to promote sustainability, including the electrification of railway lines.

On National Pollution Control Day, Indian Railways showcased its efforts to curb pollution through a post on X, highlighting the various measures it has adopted.

“From electrifying Rail tracks to introducing eco-friendly technologies, Indian Railways is embracing sustainable solutions for a greener tomorrow,” it wrote on X.

Electrification of broad gauge network

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, in a written response to the Lok Sabha on November 27, announced that Indian Railways has achieved nearly 97% electrification of its Broad Gauge network, marking significant progress in its electrification efforts.

Vaishnaw noted that approximately 45,200 route kilometers of the Broad Gauge network have been electrified since 2014-15. He also highlighted a dramatic increase in the pace of electrification, rising from an average of 1.42 kilometers per day between 2004 and 2014 to about 19.7 kilometers per day in 2023-24.
