SWR to launch unique Rail Coach restaurant in Mysuru’s Vivekananda Park

The South Western Railway (SWR) is preparing to introduce a distinctive theme-based Rail Coach Restaurant in Mysuru within the coming three months.

Located at Swami Vivekananda Park in Vontikoppal, adjacent to the renowned Sri Lakshmi Venkataramanaswamy temple on KRS Road, the establishment will operate from a renovated railway coach.
This innovative dining concept seeks to blend railway heritage with contemporary culinary experiences, whilst repurposing decommissioned railway carriages.

The establishment intends to combine the allure of classic railway coaches with contemporary dining facilities, positioning itself as a notable tourist destination.

Girish Dharmaraj Kalagonda, Divisional Commercial Manager of the SWR Mysuru Division, confirmed that the contract encompasses setting up, renovating, maintaining and operating an Air-Conditioned, Multi-Cuisine Rail Coach Restaurant within an ICF Broad Gauge Passenger Train Coach. The project’s operational duration is set for five years, commencing November 13, 2024.
According to Girish, the Vivekananda Park location was chosen considering the ongoing modernisation of Mysore Railway Station. The Vontikoppal site was deemed suitable due to its strategic location and accessibility.

He explained that whilst the initial plan involved placing the restaurant at Mysore Railway Station, the renovation works prompted the relocation. The selected space had remained unused for considerable time.

The decommissioned railway coach will undergo comprehensive renovation, including both internal and external modifications. The dining venue will provide adequate seating arrangements to ensure patron comfort.
The appointed operator will have autonomy in menu planning, offering diverse cuisine options to accommodate varied preferences.

Girish noted the successful operation of similar Rail Coach Restaurants at Hubli, Yeshvanthpur, and KSR Bengaluru stations. Given their positive reception, similar enthusiasm is anticipated for the Mysuru venture. He indicated plans for comparable establishments in Davangere and Shivamogga, contingent upon the Mysuru project’s success.
This development aligns with Indian Railways’ strategy to transform retired coaches into profitable ventures. Currently, approximately 60 such establishments operate across India, with the Mysuru project set to contribute to this expanding initiative.
