Indian Railways has achieved another milestone with the successful installation of Kavach 4.0. The Kavach is an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system that is highly technology intensive and requires safety certification of the highest order.
The Kavach aids the loco pilot in the train running within specified speed limits by automatic application of brakes in case the Loco Pilot fails to do so and also helps the train to run safely during inclement weather.

Indian Railways Kavach 4.0

The national transporter has successfully installed Kavach 4.0, an upgraded version of the existing anti-collision device over a section in Rajasthan. This new version has been installed between Sawai Madhopur and Indragarh Sumerganj Mandi stations of Kota division of West Central Railway (WCR).

On Tuesday, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw will travel in a Kavach-fitted train for a trial to check the efficiency of the automatic train protection system. During the 45-minute inspection, the Railway Minister will see if the train stops on its own at red signals without applying brakes by the loco pilot or not.
Earlier in July, Vaishnaw said that the Kavach 4.0 specification was approved by the Lucknow-based Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO). He stated that the version covers all the major features required for the diverse railway network.

Union Budget 2024-25: Indian Railways Allocation for Safety
The national transporter has allocated a major chunk of its Union Budget 2024-25 fund towards safety-related activities and the installation of the automatic train-protection system. A total of Rs 1,08,795 crore has been allocated for safety-related activities, such as the replacement of old tracks with new ones, improvement in the signalling system and construction of flyovers and underpasses, and installation of Kavach. Of these, Rs 112.57 crore has been allocated only for the Kavach in the financial year 2024-25
