In a significant step towards enhancing the safety of train operations, Indian Railways is implementing the advanced Kavach technology across the Western Railway (WR). This technology aims to minimize risks and improve operational reliability. As part of this initiative, extensive loco trials have been conducted over 405 kilometers of WR during the current financial year.

In July 2024, two critical sections of the WR network saw successful loco trials: the 67-kilometer stretch from Bilimora to Sanjay Station and the 1.3-kilometer stretch from Kankariya to Ahmedabad. These trials are a major milestone, demonstrating the effectiveness and reliability of the Kavach technology in real-world conditions.

Kavach technology, also known as Train Collision Avoidance System (TCAS), is designed to prevent signal passing at danger (SPAD) and train collisions in mid-sections. The system ensures that trains adhere to speed restrictions and halts the train automatically if it detects any risk of collision.

The implementation of Kavach technology reflects Indian Railways’ commitment to adopting cutting-edge technology to enhance passenger safety and operational efficiency. By reducing the likelihood of human error and mechanical failures, Kavach is set to make train travel safer across the Western Railway network
