Kochi: Railway gates in Kerala are to be switched to automatic system. This will help reduce physical efforts of gatekeepers as well as increase safety in rail transport.
The system was implemented at Nalukulangara and TD railway gates in Thuravoor-Ernakulam reach, under Thiruvananthapuram railway division. The signaling system was also switched to automatic at Thuravoor railway station. Madurai is the first railway station within the Southern railway limits to implement this system. Thuravoor is the second station to do so.
As the signaling system at stations becomes automatic, the conventional signaling system operated by station masters will also change. This system is presently functioning in a few stations including Ernakulam railway station.
Even though automatic, the gate can also be reset to manual mode in case of any malfunction. Around Rs 10 crore was spent to convert the two gates at Thuravoor automatic operation and to upgrade the signaling system at Thuravoor station as well.
