Vasco: With the overhead railway traction line of the Vasco section of the South Western Railway (SWR) set to go “live” from March 23, Goacan has expressed concerns about the safety of road users.
A ‘public notification’ and ‘warning to road users’ has been issued by the Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) which states that the 25,000 Volt 50 Hz AC overhead traction wires on the Vasco section will be energised on March 23 or after this date and that this line shall thereafter be treated as ‘live’.
The notice also includes a warning to road users that height restrictions must be maintained and that tall vehicles passing by could be in danger if they exceed the height limitations and hit the overhead power lines.
In a letter to deputy collector and sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Mormugao, Dattaraj Gauns Dessai, Goacan has pointed out that since this involves the safety of other vehicles passing by the railway crossing, in order to avoid accidents that could cause loss of life and limb, details and safety guidelines need to be disseminated widely.
Goacan has requested the SDM to verify whether copies of the public notice have been sent to village panchayats in Mormugao taluka, the Mormugao Municipal Council, educational institutions in the vicinity and government agencies. The letter also suggests that the SDM should check whether appropriate safety signage has been installed as required.
