Indian Railways and IIT Madras are accelerating efforts to test the indigenous Hyperloop system, with trial runs expected within the next two to three months. The tests will take place on a 410-metre Hyperloop test track at IIT Madras’ Discovery Campus in Thaiyur.
During a recent briefing in New Delhi, the IIT-Madras and TuTr Hyperloop team updated Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on the project’s progress. Backed by ₹15 crore in funding—including ₹8 crore from Indian Railways—the initiative is developing core components like the linear induction motor and validating propulsion technologies critical for pod acceleration and braking.
The vacuum tube infrastructure will test both pod speed and propulsion efficacy. Indian Railways is reportedly considering additional funding, showing strong institutional support.
Additionally, IIT Madras is planning to host the Global Hyperloop Competition in February 2025, bringing together innovators from around the world to showcase advancements in this next-gen transport technology.
