Indian Railways has partnered with Switzerland’s DETEC to modernize its infrastructure and services. This strategic collaboration promises to enhance technology sharing, improve track maintenance, and advance rail operations in India. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Indian Railways has announced a new technological partnership with Switzerland’s DETEC, focused on modernizing infrastructure. This recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) builds on their ongoing efforts in the technology and infrastructure sectors.

Indian Railways Embraces Swiss Technology for Modernization

Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw noted that the MoU aligns with India’s modernization ambitions. He emphasized the MoU’s importance in expanding technology sharing, improving track maintenance, and refining management practices.

The signing ceremony featured Swiss Federal Councilor Albert Roesti, who highlighted how Swiss rail technology can benefit Indian operations. He stated that operational efficiency, safety standards, and infrastructure will all improve.

The original MoU, signed in 2017, had a five-year scope focusing on critical rail technology areas. This framework emphasized traction rolling stock, electric multiple units, propulsion equipment, and infrastructure.

How Indian Railways and DETEC Plan to Enhance Efficiency?
Under this agreement, key areas like freight cars, passenger cars, and station modernization received significant attention. Both nations prioritized tunneling technology, rail electrification, and multimodal solutions.

To facilitate collaboration, a Joint Working Group (JWG) was formed, convening multiple times to refine objectives. Meetings on October 21, 2019, and August 30, 2022, targeted high-priority topics for enhanced cooperation.

The third JWG meeting occurred on October 11, 2023, with Indian and Swiss representatives exchanging updates. India highlighted investment prospects, encouraging Swiss companies to contribute to infrastructure projects.

The partnership aims to improve Indian rail service efficiency, benefiting both passenger and freight services. Swiss firms are expected to provide machinery, materials, and tunneling expertise under this renewed agreement.

Present at the event were Indian Ambassador to Switzerland, Mridul Kumar, and Federal Councilor Albert Roesti. This collaboration signifies a continued dedication to advancing Indian rail infrastructure with international expertise.
