Guwahati: Indian Railways is all set to install Kavach 4.0 – an indigenous automatic train protection system – on 10,000 locomotives across its network to ensure the safety of passengers.

After a successful trial, implementation of Kavach 4.0 was done at a stretch of 108-km section on West Central Railway.

After this achievement, Indian Railways will now install Kavach 4.0 in a mission mode across its network in all the new projects.

All the locomotives, where a lower version of Kavach was installed, will be replaced with the upgraded Kavach 4.0.

Under the Northeast Frontier Railway (NF Railway), approximately 1,966 route kilometres of length from West Bengal’s Malda Town to Dibrugarh in
Assam have been identified for implementation of Kavach 4.0.

Kavach has been developed by the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) to boost safety in trains operations.

It prevents accidents by passing a signal (red) in danger and over-speeding.

Kavach activates the train braking system automatically if the driver fails to control the train as per the specified speed restrictions. It also helps the train run safely during inclement weather.

It has been certified the highest level of safety integrity level-4 (SIL-4) by an independent safety assessor.

The Supreme Court in April this year appreciated Indian Railways for implementation of Kavach in trains.
