Indian Railways will roll out its first hydrogen train by the end of 2024, as part of efforts to reduce carbon emissions and enhance sustainability. The plan is to have 50 such trains by 2047, according to Anil Kumar Khandelwal, Member (Infrastructure) of the Railway Board, who spoke at FICCI’s Future Rail India 2024 conference.

Khandelwal also provided updates on the high-speed rail project, with the first bullet train expected to be operational by 2027. Additionally, Indian Railways is expanding its Indigenous train protection system, Kavach, which currently covers 1,400 kilometers. The system will soon expand by 3,000 kilometers on the Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah routes, with bids for another 3,200 kilometers invited.

The GatiShakti Directorate is working to accelerate infrastructure development, now delivering more than 14 kilometers of track per day, compared to four kilometers in previous years. Indian Railways aims to increase its share of the country’s freight logistics market, targeting 3,000 million tonnes by 2030-31, up from the 1,600 million tonnes moved last year.

These developments are seen as key steps towards modernizing India’s railway network, with a focus on clean energy and enhanced safety.
