In a significant development for India’s railway infrastructure, the country has reached a milestone with the operation of 100 Vande Bharat trains. With 100 Vande Bharat trains now operational, the Indian Railways has significantly expanded its fleet of modern, high-speed trains. The Vande Bharat trains are a symbol of the nation’s progress in modernising its rail network.
“Filling a nation-wide fervour with the celebration of 100 Vande Bharat Express train services, connecting 250+ districts in a swift and seamless Rail network,” Ministry of Railways said in a tweet.
PM Modi flags off 10 new Vande Bharat trains
Prime Minister Narendra Modi flaged off ten new Vande Bharat trains on Tuesday (March 12), namely – Ahmedabad-Mumbai Central, Secunderabad-Visakhapatnam, Mysuru- Dr. MGR Central (Chennai), Patna- Lucknow, New Jalpaiguri-Patna, Puri-Visakhapatnam, Lucknow – Dehradun, Kalaburagi – Sir M Visvesvaraya Terminal Bengaluru, Ranchi-Varanasi, Khajuraho- Delhi (Nizamuddin).
The first Vande Bharat Express train was flagged off by PM Modi on the New Delhi-Kanpur-Allahabad-Varanasi route on February 15, 2019, marking a historic milestone for Indian Railways.

Vande Bharat Express is a medium-distance superfast express service operated by Indian Railways. These semi high-speed trains boasts advanced features including high speed, improved safety standards, and enhanced passenger comfort. These trains are designed to reduce travel time between key destinations, offering commuters a faster and more efficient mode of transportation.
What are the features of Vande Bharat Express trains?
The Vande Bharat Express trains, with a top speed of 160 kmph, offer travel experiences akin to Shatabdi Trains but with upgraded amenities. Notable features include an advanced braking system, automatic doors in every coach, GPS-based audio-visual passenger information systems, onboard Wi-Fi hotspots for entertainment, and plush seating for optimal comfort.
In the executive class of Vande Bharat trains, passengers enjoy rotating chairs, while all restrooms employ bio-vacuum technology. Additionally, each seat boasts personalized lighting with dual-mode functionality.
What are Vande Bharat sleeper trains?
Indian Railways is currently in the process of developing a sleeper version of the Vande Bharat Express trains to accommodate overnight travel. The prototype of this sleeper variant is being manufactured by BEML in Bengaluru. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently inaugurated the car body of this prototype, marking a significant step forward in the project’s progress.
