The Railway Ministry has been continuously taking several steps to enhance facilities avail to commuters. To avoid any misshapen with women and children in trains, the ministry has recently announced the installation of CCTV cameras in about 15,000 coaches running on the tracks. The safety of women and children in trains has always been one of the major concerns of the ministry. Often, women, girls, and children face numerous challenges and harassment while taking a journey in the trains as the crowd offers anonymity. This move of the Railway will help in tackling such mishaps.

Number of trains to be equipped
According to the railway ministry, out of a total of 15,000 coaches, 14,387 coaches will be premium trains like Rajdhani, Duronto and Shatabdi as well as passenger trains like electric multiple units (EMU), Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) and MEMU and Diesel Electric Multiple Units (DEMU).

The project will cover trains operating all over the nation, and the ministry notified Parliament last year that so far, around 2,930 rail coaches have been installed with CCTVs and the current order is more than five times that.

The railway ministry is planning to cover a total of 60,000 coaches with CCTV surveillance at doors, vestibule areas, and corridor areas. While installing CCTVs, the railway will keep in mind that there is no breach of privacy. The Internet Protocol-based CCTVs will also have video analytics and facial recognition systems.

It is estimated that a sum of Rs 705 crore will be invested to bring this plan into action.

Benefits of CCTVs
CCTVs will be helpful in remote operations and monitoring of coaches from RPF posts, and divisional and zonal headquarters. At least two panic buttons will be provided in each coach and pressing them will send an alert to the nearest RPF post or data centre.

They will enable remote operation and monitoring of coaches from RPF posts, and divisional and zonal headquarters. There will be the provision of at least two panic buttons in each coach and pressing them will alert the nearest RPF post or data centre.

Despite shock and vibration the system will function normally and can withstand them with ease. All the new trains like Tejas and Vande Bharat have already equipped with CCTV cameras. According to the National Crime Records Bureau, 4.24 lakh cases were registered in 2021 by the Railway Protection Force.
